As the train wheels clickety-clacked over the rails, Nancy Prescott thought Colorado was the most scenic spot on earth. God must have touched this region. More than touched it. He must have curved the landscape of mountains and lakes and longhorn sheep and elk with his fingers to produce such a beautiful country. Little does she know that her ride will bring her to one of the most notorious gunmen in the West. The bounty hunter, Ethan Card. And bounty hunters rarely lack enemies. Can Nancy and Ethan find the peace they are looking for, or will the past come knocking on (or knocking down!) their door? Review: BEYOND BETRAYAL is set in the Montana Territory in 1887. Delilah Sinclair is on her way to help her younger sister, Eve, who has run into financial troubles. Delilah is a woman of mystery. She is dressed as a widow and goes by the name of Mrs. Sterne, although we know that this is a ruse, we don't know why. She meets Matt Chandler who is the sheriff of Red Rock. We find out that he is actually Samson Towers who we know, from a WANTED Poster, is actually a wanted man. We don't know how or why he is the sheriff under an assumed name. Even Delilah's dog has an alias of Poochy, when her real name is Poopsie. Michels does a better job then me, of keeping this organized and simple. Delilah is attracted to the strong, handsome Sheriff, but at the same time she is afraid of him—of all men actually. She earns his disdain when he finds out that her occupation is professional gambler. In fact, these characters both have to battle and let go a lot of their past before they can go on with their future. Michels calls this "a retelling of the Samson and Delilah story in old west Montana in 1887." Thus we know that the story is based on a betrayal. As a reader you know what the betrayal will be, but the suspense is still in the story. Michels creates some great imagery. Two of my favorites are, "With a past that shadowed him like a stalking wolf", and she says Samson's gaze is like "cold fire". Christine Michels' two main characters are richly drawn and she has created backgrounds that are believable motivation for the personalities that they have. She leads the reader along by letting a little bit of the history out at a time. I really like the fact that Matt (Samson) is an alpha male yet admits his feelings for Delilah before the end of the book. Beyond Betrayal is an entertaining, fast paced read! Christine Michels does a great job of creating deep, multi-layered characters. Copyright © Literary Times, Inc. Product Description: Samson Towers was on the run from the law when a dying man offered him the chance for a new life. With her glossy black tresses and brilliant blue eyes, the widow Delilah Sterne drew many a male admirer’s hungry gaze. Now, dealing poker in Red Rock in an effort to help keep her sister’s ranch out of the hands of the bankers, the beautiful gambler found herself drawn to the town’s handsome sheriff. But the tension caused by the sheriff’s constant watchfulness caused a losing streak that Delilah couldn’t afford. Knowing that she had to get him out of her life, she came up with a plan that would benefit both of them. And young would-be lovers Jed Harris and Danielle Greer are fighting off zombies as they try to rescue a priest, a nun, and a passel of young kids in a one-room school that's surrounded by the undead!
