Fragile Demon: Juan Soriano in Mexico, 1935 to 1950(With: Octavio Paz,Edward J. Sullivan)
One of Mexico’s most important modern artists, Juan Soriano (1920–2006) served as a link between the nationalist imagery of the Mexican muralists and the experimental vanguard of the 1950s and 1960s known as “La Ruptura.” This fascinating book, which examines the earliest period of Soriano’s career, is the first focused, critical study of him in English. Opening with texts on Soriano by the artist’s friends and colleagues Octavio Paz and Carlos Fuentes (appearing here for the first time in English), the book places Soriano’s work within the context of Mexican painting during this vibrant and transitional moment. In his essay, Edward Sullivan examines the parallels between paintings by Soriano and those of other modernists from Europe and the United States. He also analyzes the continuity within Soriano’s paintings of certain Mexican pictorial traditions while simultaneously emphasizing the importance of his conscious rejection of folkloric elements sometimes associated with Mexican modern art. Postcard Fictions
Since the 1930s, the friendly glow of a neon motel "vacancy" sign has signaled a long anticipated break for the road weary motorist. The essential aim of the motel is to provide convenient, comfortable and affordable accommodation for exhausted travelers. Yet, despite their image as places of wholesome reliability, run by proprietors of strong moral fiber -- with a courtesy bible in each room -- motels have earned a reputation as the venue of choice for people seeking a discreet rendezvous. With advertisements declaring the availability of "hourly rates," J. Edgar Hoover, in 1940, labeled motels as "dens of vice and corruption." In Postcard Fictions , Andrew Valko captures this seamier side of motel life in vivid detail. This series of paintings, hyper realistic images of motels glow and beckon eerily from the side of the highway. In Valko's motel rooms, people are engaged in various solitary activities: a scantily clad woman watches television while her companion sleeps; another woman takes nude pictures of herself, scattering polaroids all over the bed; still another woman sits in her lingerie with her back to the viewer as she watches Snow White on the television. A disturbing psychological undercurrent inhabits Valko's motels both inside and out. The alienation and loneliness of Valko's paintings is captured strikingly in the accompanying short story by Michelle Berry. Known for her complex psychological narratives, Berry weaves a disturbing tale of two motel inhabitants that captures the unsettling events of life at the side of the highway.
Richard Prince: Hippie Drawings
There are no smoking cowboys swinging their lassoes or bare-breasted blondes on heavy motorcycles in this droll collection of highly expressive drawings and watercolors. Au contraire , the inventive shapes and joyful colors recall children's drawings or paintings by the mentally ill. Half-figures of indeterminate gender with staring eyes, big ears and frizzy hair smirk challengingly at the viewer, offering an inventory of possibilities, many of which later find their way into Prince's joke paintings of the same period.
