"All good heroes are insane." Was that really a joke? Jonathon Hunter hasn’t the time to ponder the labels people try to put on him. The war shifts from defensive to offensive. The stakes get higher, as the means to fight the aggressors finally become available. But has he risen too high? Or are the consequences of his own actions, interfering with his judgement? As fast as you move, the past is faster, and always catches up with you when you least expect it. This is not a game, and being a Hero has its own price tag. "I'm not in the rescue business," states Jonathon Hunter, to the amusement of his crew. But rescues are the least of his concerns. Darkness is coming, and there are still people out there who don’t like him. The Sirius system has always fascinated Jon, and he is drawn to solve its mysteries. But what is the price of being curious? Can one simple step cause what you dread the most? Is it possible to do one too many rescues? To take one step too far into the unknown? For those who take that one step too many; be they foolhardy, curious, or simply unlucky; hope takes the shape of the Hero to the Rescue. There are some days when you should just stay in bed. Jon Hunter begins to realize this, as the consequences of saying yes, when he should have said no, begin to add up. The trouble with making tech advances, is someone will always come up with a counter eventually. And when this occurs on one of those days you should have stayed in bed, the cosmos tends to demonstrate just how many ways things can actually go wrong. But time is ticking away. The Door to Jon's home, and all the answers he so desperately wants, is soon to open. But it's no longer a question of will he get there on time, but will he get there at all? Thirteen doesn't like humans. Jon Hunter has made it home. But a lot of things have happened to him over the last year. Some of them made no sense at all to those with him, but they accepted the really weird as if it was part of him. Jon himself didn’t understand a lot of it, but accepted he wasn’t allowed to know yet. But what really happened, and why? For 600 odd years, Hunter's have traveled space. Where did it all start? What were the events which shaped the galaxy Jon Hunter finds himself in? And what of the previous Jon Hunter's, mentioned in prophecy? Thirteen doesn't like humans. The last thing he wants is to be assigned a mission to babysit them. Given a choice, he'd happily let them blow themselves up, after he saved all the cats first. Exactly how humans could ever have anything to do with galaxy wide consequences is completely beyond his ability to understand. When asked to perform an intervention, there was always freewill to choose not to. But in this case, does he really have a choice? For Thirteen, walking with humans for 650 years, is definitely the long road to Gaia. Jonathon Hunter has at last come home. Or so he thinks. The Door is only open for five days, and it should be long enough for what he needs. What he doesn’t need is his whole concept of home to be challenged. Not when there is so much else to do. The answers he's long wanted are now within his grasp. But does he really want to know the truth? Can he handle the truth? And what else is there he doesn’t know about? The Darkness is coming, and Gaia has its role to play. But Prophecy doesn't care who believes in it. It unfolds as foretold. Shock follows shock, and as the stakes get higher, Jon's grip on reality comes down to one simple question. A question everyone else knows the answer to. Home is where the Hero is. I'm Jane. I'm an AI. It's my job to run Jon Hunter's ships for him, but I also act as a bodyguard, confidant, and companion as well. I've been asked to explain some things for you. This is not a novel, but a reference guide. So far, The Hunter Legacy story has come to the end of its second arc, after ten novels and a novella. But we were discussing things one night in the rec room, and it was felt that some things mentioned in the books, may not have been understood, or their origin may have been missed. There's been no secret that many names and concepts come from science fiction, and other origins, some uniquely Australian. So it's possible some may have missed the connections of things. It's my job to dot the I's and cross the T's, so to speak. How many of the references did you spot? How many did you miss? Which ones didn't you understand? These have been compiled more or less in the order encountered in the books, listed by book. What really goes into the mind of an author, so a story like The Hunter Legacy emerges years later? Come and see. The Owl war is over, but for Snark, normal isn’t what it used to be. He's on his way home from seeing Jane crowned Queen, and the Kingdom of Hunter's Run come into being. The war might be over, and the trade deal he made at the end of it might finally be enough for this wayward cat to be allowed back into cat society. The only thing faster than human ships, is the stories about their entry into sector ten, which ripple into the adjacent sectors. On the Cat Homeworld in sector eight, this triggers long awaited, and long stifled change. For a Warlord in sector nine, human tech would allow him to rule the sector, instead of his currently small empire. Snark ends up taking the long way home, along the way teaming up with the last of the Romanovs, a Scot, and a small band of fellow cats, traveling on a human ship. Unbeknownst to them all, the AI Warspite travels with them, keeping Jane up to date with what is happening outside her immediate attention to building a Kingdom. Two of them are on their own quests, but when Snark is tasked with the ultimate safety of the Cat Homeworld, are they trying to do three quests at once, or are they all really aspects of Snark's Quest? Everyone wants something. Snark wants Seasprite, owned by Anna, who seeks the Destiny Stone. Jamie wants Anna, but she’s obsessed with the Stone, so he wants the Stone to give to her. Warspite wants to end the secrecy of his presence on Seasprite. The enigmatic and evil Brotherhood want the Stone, and don’t care how many die in the process. Jane cares how many die, but is busy building her Kingdom, making alliances across four sectors, ensuring Duke Fred sorts out Cat World issues, and enlisting her AI brethren to stave off boredom, and join in the quest for the Stone. The big news everywhere is Seasprite, the only Human ship beyond Hunter's Run, but the worry is the swathe of destruction which follows her course through sector eight. Signs, portents, visions, and maps found along the way, define a dangerous quest. As ship and crew get further away from friends, is it possible to make new friends to offset enemies? At the heart of everything is the Destiny Stone, real or imagined. Snark doesn’t know if it’s real. But mop heads or not, he’s going to see this quest through, regardless of the consequences. Unanswered questions lead in strange directions, and a war for no reason, is only part of the mystery. But through everything, Thorn carries two themes. The guilty will be punished, and there will be peace! Yesterday was just the start. Now he's Today's Spacemage. The Spacemage is back! It’s been 80 years since Thorn split his people into 6 societies spread across the galaxy. He’s known all that time a timeline shift was coming, and the role he needed to play when it did. The mages of his world are ready, including his great-great nephew, Bud. For Bud, living in the shadow of his legend relative hasn’t really been an issue, and his role in the timeline shift is supposed to be minor. But Kali has an agenda, magic has its own agenda, and since Thorn is old, and tired of his people’s reliance on him, he too has an agenda. On the heels of the shift, comes the Imperium, and the war with the Trixone. The Imperium needs recruits, and especially mages. Bud is a willing volunteer, but is it a good idea to merge a Thorn’s line mage with high technology? Admiral Jane has handpicked a team, and Bud finds himself being … Midshipman Spacemage. Bud and his team are now officially a squadron. An Ensign in the navy is a Pilot Officer in fighters, and both are entry level officer ranks, and rarely ever paid any attention to. A squadron of Ensigns is a contradiction in terms, especially to the new influx of experienced pilots from new Imperium members. But the team are too busy with Eagle Wing to notice the changes happening around them. Magic in combat changes the dynamic. But every time one side gains an advantage, the other will adapt somehow. As the first of the new Excalibur squadrons ready for combat, Bud and his squadron must lead adapting to the Trixone response to their own success. But who is the real enemy? Does magic level the rank structure? Or emphasize differences? Should it even matter? Bud finds himself in the middle of the new verses traditional argument, as the Imperium military expands by necessity. The squadron is still Jane’s experiment, but is this way of training the captains of the future really going to work? Magic doesn’t solve everything, but for now, Bud must be… Ensign Spacemage. Even for a powerful Spacemage, war can turn personal in an instant. Bud is now the captain of a small capital ship, and so tactics must change. And once again, Navy Mage Squadron One leads the way. But the more the Imperium ups their game, the faster the Trixone adapt. And in the middle of things changing around Bud, the new prototype dreadnought is stolen. While seemingly unimportant to the war, Navy Mage One and Eagle Wing will find out just how wrong that perception is. Just when is a mysterious invitation a good thing or a bad thing, and will they be able to tell the difference in time? For Bud, squadron command gets real, and the stakes are building as Rogue gets nearer to its destination. From a war being fought in the center of the core of the galaxy, suddenly the arena becomes much bigger. And to cross vast distances quickly, the Imperium needs: Lieutenant Spacemage. There’s no such thing as a nice clean war. If fighting a war which might never end wasn’t enough, now the Imperium has a new enemy. But now promoted to be a genuine squadron leader, Bud finds himself leading more than his squadron. Just how complicated can war get? Is the enemy of your enemy really your enemy? Or can their enemy become your friend while you’re still at war with each other? Even in the middle of a brand new war, Bud finds people who think they know better about what he should be doing. He’s thousands of light years away, and there are always still obligations to home which must be fulfilled, and the future to be provided for. And just maybe, can they be made to work for you on the fringes of the core? The Imperium really has no business in that part of space, let alone fighting another war, but what do you do when you get asked for help, and the original hero is not available? Never underestimate the capacity of a plant to learn something new from a dinosaur. Bud is getting a crash course in how to fight a war all on his own. At the same time, the needs of his homeworld and the Imperium distract him from the goal of finding where the Rawtenuga entered the core galaxy from. Being Thorn’s heir has both positive and negative aspects to it, and as the war with the Rawtenuga keeps getting bigger, so do the demands from the civilian side of his life. The Imperium’s eternal problem is not having enough ships to fight both the wars it now has. And civilians also want new ships. But as Bud’s life gets more complicated, the Imperator starts pushing him to fill in the gaps. Jon knows what Bud’s been up to, approves of what he’s doing, but has no idea of the scope of it. No-one does. But does Bud really know what he’s doing? And should a lowly Commander be getting this much responsibility, even if he is Commander Spacemage? A complicated war is about to get a lot more complicated. And Bud’s brought it on himself. There’s no end in sight to either the Rawtenuga or Trixone wars. And the search for the dinosaur home world is proving just how big the galaxy is, especially where it’s not properly mapped. The enemy keep popping up in too many places, and as fast as the sensor network expands, they seem to have expanded faster. Bud’s been stepping up continuously since he joined the Imperium military, but now it’s time for others to as well. But in the midst of the mission, civilian matters continue to intrude, and being the goto mage has its downsides. Even with unexpected help, more resources, and finally producing shipyards, the Rawtenuga seem unstoppable. The question has always been, where the hell are they from? But is the answer going to be what they need to end the war? Or is it just going to raise a lot more questions? It’s all on the shoulders of a very young Fleet Captain Spacemage. Even a Spacemage must answer the call of a higher being. The Rawtenuga and Trixone wars are over, and Bud and his people have been relieved of the task of liberating the remaining Rawtenuga held planets. Jon and Jane have known about the Sanctuary system’s planetary alignment for some time. All they know is it points to the Outback system, where the Door to Gaia used to be. Bud knows Ganesha wants him to do something, but doesn’t know what or where. Could the alignment point to some threat from Gaia? Or to a place where an intergalactic rift could come from anywhere? The Thorn’s Cluster Militia is tasked with handling whatever comes through the Outback system. Even if it means going to another galaxy. Bud is the Spacemage, and the bearer of Kali’s Sceptre. Liza Pound now has more than she ever wanted. And a lot she didn’t. Like a bullseye painted on her back. She’s stuck a stick in the local ‘ant hill’, and the foxes are not happy about it. The Keerah are too busy fighting themselves to control the foxes, and someone else doing it was not in anyone’s hunt plan. Not that Liza has any illusions about how much she can do, even though she has to admit it’s gone well so far. But two planets saved is only the beginning. It’s now Fox Season. Lyla Cowan just lost her command. And it’s not her fault! Now she’s cast adrift with a bunch of misfits. Being a senior fighter pilot was her achieved ambition, short lived as it turned out to be. So what sort of life purpose is there without that for someone like her? There are options, but how survivable are they without the latest tech she’s relied on for so long? The future looks bleak, and the chip on her shoulder is huge. And for right now, everything is just Unfair. Lyla Cowan still isn’t sure she’s doing what she should be. Democratic Union and Naranja space proved to be hostile, but they finally convinced her to upgrade. So where next for her fledgling mercenary misfits? They’ve been invited to Karn, but is the League of Worlds’ space too tame? But adjacent to Karn is the third of the core belonging to the kangaroo like Ralnor. No-one knows anything about what goes on there, except the Ralnor value law and order above all. But where the Keerah impose military order, the Ralnor are supposed to enforce laws. Exactly what the difference is, no-one knows. The question is, is Ralnor space a good place for the Unwary to go? Lyla Cowan is finally feeling good about where she is. But what she is remains a yet to be answered question. Ralnor space is proving to be just as lucrative as DU space was. And just as dangerous. The Ralnor don’t like the Unruly, and they act like it’s not a problem. But Lyla can now see the cracks in the façade. But are things actually much worse than anyone will admit? Now she has a full service mercenary company at her back. Now she can face whatever comes at her with confidence. But Unruly is, as Unruly does. Lyla Cowan has just had a shock, but to everyone else it was inevitable. Her life is a roller coaster ride these days, but it feels like home to her now. Lyla Cowan never understood what happened. One moment she was leading a squadron, the next she was waking up in a care unit with people angry at her. It set her on a path to what she has become, and what she now has. She was undone, and then came back from that. Or at least, everyone thinks so. Things seem to be getting even more chaotic, but it keeps her occupied. And dare she admit it, happy. But at the back of her mind is always the niggling doubt. Doubts about herself, and how she was undone once, without knowing why, or if it could happen again. Is the reason she can’t accept being who everyone else thinks she is, a fear of again being Undone? Karen Drayson just got two shocks. And everyone is celebrating one of them. The hard ceiling is the one all cadets aspire to go through in their careers. But when you’ve done it, you find out why it’s so hard. The threat of being pushed back down into your place doesn’t help things either. When you stand as the gatekeeper to home, what is going on there is a step removed. There’s a line there you just don’t cross. But in Karen’s case, that line is also what separates her from the Soft Ceiling.
