Tessa is a wild and feisty thirteen year old with a passion for animals. She lives outside Lerwick on the Shetlands with her mother, Catherine. Together, they run the ‘Bear Garden’, a sanctuary for abandoned and injured animals. But Tessa is appalled by her mother’s friendship with Nick, the young veterinary student who helps out. She does everything she can to annoy him, hoping he will leave. Tessa’s father Lewis Lambert is a famous wildlife film maker, currently somewhere in Ecuador. He has no time to write, little time to phone. During a trip to feed wild cats at the old harbour, Tessa discovers a silver female feral hiding amongst rocks underneath an old boat. The cat holds an amazing secret. Tessa gently talks to it in English but finds the cat seems to whisper back - in old Norse - the ancient language of the Shetlands. They grow to understand each other over time and their lives become inextricably intertwined. Perhaps there is another secret hidden amongst the silvery-grey fur?
