Sir Walter Scott, 1st Baronet FRSE (15 August 1771 – 21 September 1832) was a Scottish historical novelist, playwright, poet and historian. Many of his works remain classics of both English-language literature and of Scottish literature. Famous titles include Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, Old Mortality, The Lady of the Lake, Waverley, The Heart of Midlothian and The Bride of Lammermoor. Although primarily remembered for his extensive literary works and his political engagement, Scott was an advocate, judge and legal administrator by profession, and throughout his career combined his writing and editing work with his daily occupation as Clerk of Session and Sheriff-Depute of Selkirkshire.

Excerpt from Scott's Lord of the Isles: With Introduction, Notes, and Vocabulary One Sunday, says Mr. Hutton, about two years before his call to the bar, Scott offered his umbrella to a young lady of much beauty who was coming out of the Grey friars' Church during a shower. The umbrella was graciously accepted, the result being a passionate but unsuccessful attachment, the memory of which seems to have affected Scott deeply for many years. The lady having married another (afterwards, as Sir W. Forbes, a true friend to Scott), the disappointed suitor, as so often happens, in all haste, within a few months, gave his hand, if not his heart, to the first who took his pass ing fancy. Mademoiselle Charpentier, or Miss Carpenter, daughter of a French refugee, seems to have been 'a lively beauty, probably of no great depth of character.' The result of the marriage - of this mating of a bird of paradise with an eagle - is said to have been 'happy on the whole'; but his wife was evidently not the source of much inspiration or comfort to Scott in his literary work and his financial anxieties.
