Book Description of Near Death to Near Deaf My aim in writing this book is to be both informative and inspirational from someone who has experienced firsthand the “it could never happen to me” ordeal of spinal meningitis and its consequences. For me, the consequences were to pass near death and forever abide near deafness. Tragically, it did happen to me and it could happen to you or someone you know or love. More than 1,500 cases of meningococcal meningitis (the worst kind) are reported on average each year. About 11% of those infected can expect to die. I hope this book can help prevent that or at least make you aware of what most people would consider unthinkable. No, I am not a doctor but I’ve learned a lot the hard way when stricken by this deadly disease and stood at death’s door within hours of being infected. Every effort has been made by diligent research and an interview with my primary attending physician to be as accurate as possible. No two humans are alike so symptoms and results will differ from one person to the next. I’m simply and sincerely sharing with you how it affected me. I’ve tried, in my story, to make the dry facts as interesting as possible by revealing some of the events of my personal life as they led me toward the worst days of my existence. You will read how my mother believed she was comforted by an angel while she prayed for my recovery. Dealing with deafness, or a profound hearing loss, is not easy. It can be easier to just give up and let life pass you by. I was tempted to do this. Here you will learn how faith and help from many friends and loved ones pulled me through then and now. You will enjoy reading this book if you or someone you know has ever developed spinal meningitis, has lost their hearing or needs inspiration to press ahead in spite of heartbreaking events in your life whatever they may be. Thank you for reading it and recommending it to others.
