In this fifth installment of the Fernandina Beach Mystery Series, local maintenance man, and amateur sleuth, Rex Langley is called in to repair one of the apartments over Collins' Hardware, and quickly realizes, all may not be as it seems. The apartment, he was told, was damaged in a break-in. Why would Roscoe Wade break into Darlene Sullivan's apartment? Rex wonders. The two had been neighbors for years. Fernandina Beach Detective Calvin Rance, one of Mrs. Sullivan's former students, says, “It's an open and shut case. Roscoe broke in, not knowing Darlene was home. There was a struggle, and Roscoe, slipping on a puddle of water, falls and hits his head on the edge of the tub.” As Rex digs deeper, a mysterious man, a telescope, and a long ago death forces him to bring his wife, Gayle Langley, a retired Navy Master-at-arms, into the investigation.
