Cover for Sherlock Holmes: A Year of Mystery 1883

The ongoing saga of a beautiful friendship! For all we know, or think we know, about Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson , what we don't know is far, far greater. In one of the duo's most exciting cases, The Adventure of the Speckled Band , we know when Helen Stoner arrives "in a considerable state of excitement" at the door of 221B Baker Street, seeking the assistance of Holmes and Watson: "It was early in April in the year '83..." But what happened during the rest of 1883? Or all of 1884? To help fill the void, we have asked today's top Sherlockian writers to rummage through their Watsonian correspondence and uncover the many mysteries left untold until now. There's a new story for every month of the year, forewords from noted Holmesians, and a gorgeous cover from Jeffrey McKeever, whose work continues to grace the pages of The Strand Magazine!

Cover for Sherlock Holmes: A Year of Mystery: 1881

The beginning of a beautiful friendship! For all we know, or think we know, about Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson, what we don’t know is far, far greater. In the duo’s first case, A Study in Scarlet , we learn that Holmes and Watson met on January 1st, 1881, and subsequently moved into an apartment together at 221b Baker Street. Their first case officially began on March 4th of that year, and it is argued that “The Adventure of the Resident Patient” possibly took place in October of 1881, depending on which version of the story you read. But what happened during the rest of 1881? Or all of 1882? To help fill the void, we have asked today’s top Sherlockian writers to rummage through their Watsonian correspondence and uncover the many mysteries left untold until now. There’s a new story for every month of the year!

Cover for Sherlock Holmes: A Year of Mystery 1885

As a scientist, Sherlock Holmes would have certainly been familiar with the famous dictum attributed to Aristotle: Nature abhors a vacuum. In that same vein, fans of the Great Detective must look at 1885 and 1886 and see a somewhat similar void. Conan Doyle set no cases during those years; in fact, if you believe Doyle, Holmes and Watson remained inactive for a period of some 30 months. Given the expenses of everyday life, it’s difficult to imagine Holmes moonlighting as a hansom driver (a job he would have been eminently suited for, given his intimate knowledge of London’s streets and byways) or Watson, putting in extra hours at the clinic. Obviously, they were working on various cases, including a number that were withheld for various reasons. However, we have reached out to Sherlockians around the globe and asked them to review carefully any correspondence with Dr. Watson which may have come into their possession. As you might expect, they unearthed a plethora of stories which occurred in 1885 and ‘86. We have culled through them with an eye towards selecting not only those cases which showcase the amazing deductive abilities of the Great Detective but those which offer insights into his unique personality as well as those highlighting the relationship between Holmes and his Boswell. Having said that, know that once again, “The game is afoot!” Enjoy!
