Thomas Jefferson still struggles with the exclusion of his clause on slavery from the Declaration of Independence. He is afraid that ignoring abolition will cause more difficulties for the Republic down the road. At the same time, the British are landing troops in New York by the thousands. What if he does not sign the Declaration he wrote? What if the delegates from all 13 colonies do not sign either? How will the new nation survive if it does not stand united against the most powerful military force in the world?
