*Royalties donated to Our Lady's Children's Hospital, Crumlin* Over the Moon is a collection of wonderful stories told by some of Ireland's most well known and well loved personalities on how life changed when their new born arrived. Both mothers and fathers tell stories of when their child was born - some romantic, some dramatic and some bordering on hell raisingly scary! But all with the one common theme, that pregnancy and the endless hours/days of labour are genuinely worth it in the end! The book features stories by Paul Costelloe, Ian Dempsey, Mary O'Rourke, Lorraine Keane, Cathy Kelly and Amanda Brunker to name but a few. It is a heart warming read. No matter how long the forty weeks seem, or indeed how much the birthing plan goes out the window, the end result is the same an inexplicable falling head over heels in love with your newborn. Over the Moon is undeniably full of the most honest and wonderful accounts - guilt, the unknown, joy, sleep deprivation, laughter and learning. Becoming a parent profoundly alters your values, your beliefs, your priorities, as you are confronted with the miracle and wonder and sometimes the heartache of your own children. Here some of Ireland's top personalities write open reflections about their experiences of becoming a parent. It's a must for all parents or would-be parents!
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was created in 1948 as a direct response to the inhumanity suffered worldwide throughout, and following, World War Two. In 2008, to celebrate the UDHR's 60th anniversary, Seán Love who was executive director of Amnesty International (Ireland) at the time, and author Roddy Doyle decided to celebrate this magnificent declaration, whilst also publicizing the document itself. Dealing with topics as outlined in the UDHR, the articles tackle the varied subjects of fair trials, prison, torture, war, refugees, but also, education, poverty, health, leisure, employment, and housing. Containing 30 articles with an introduction by Poet Laureate Seamus Heaney, this book is a special commemoration to the work of the UDHR and Amnesty International. In a modern twist, it also features a special 'My article' by popular fictional wealthy former schoolboy rugby player Ross O'Carroll-Kelly (created by journalist Paul Howard) adding to the contemporary worth of this collection. London has the greatest literary tradition of any city in the world. Its roll call of storytellers includes cultural giants like Shakespeare, Defoe, and Dickens, and an innumerable host of writers of all sorts who sought to capture the essence of the place. Acclaimed historian Jerry White has collected some twenty-six stories to illustrate the extraordinary diversity of both London life and writing over the past four centuries, from Shakespeare’s day to the present. These are stories of fact and fiction and occasionally something in between, some from well-known voices and others practically unknown. Here are dramatic views of such iconic events as the plague, the Great Fire of London, and the Blitz, but also William Thackeray’s account of going to see a man hanged, Thomas De Quincey’s friendship with a teenaged prostitute, and Doris Lessing’s defense of the Underground. This literary London encompasses the famous Baker Street residence of Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes and the bombed-out moonscape of Elizabeth Bowen’s wartime streets, Charles Dicken’s treacherous River Thames and Frederick Treves’s tragic Elephant Man. Graham Greene, Jean Rhys, Muriel Spark, and Hanif Kureishi are among the many great writers who give us their varied Londons here, revealing a city of boundless wealth and ragged squalor, of moving tragedy and riotous joy.
