The Big Gun was a Parrot 30-Pound rifled cannon. Over eleven feet long, it weighed almost nine thousand pounds and could hurl a 4.2 inch shell more than two miles. Despite its great size and weight, the Yankees were moving the Big Gun from place to place across the Arkansas battle-front. No Confederate field artillery piece could match its range. It flung death and destruction accurately from far beyond their reach. General Ole Devil Hardin knew that the Big Gun must be destroyed, but it would take a man of courage to do it. The officer he selected for the mission was young. Promoted in the field, he was commanding the roughest, toughest, most ornery fighting Company in the Texas Light Cavalry, Captain Dusty Fog…

Belle Boyd came from a family of eight sisters and though he loved them deeply, her father had always wanted a son. With her riding ability and her quick shot, Belle was the closest he would come. On a fateful day, Belle would have to say goodbye to her past and attempt to lead her region to victory. The Yankees stormed the Boyd farm and quickly killed Belle's mother and father. Belle quickly drew her father's sword and savagely attacked the group of men. Her skill and agility impressed and terrified them and they fled. Now, she'll do anything to avenge the death of her parents, even if it means going deep into enemy territory. Initial attempts to join the Rebels come to naught, but Belle presses on, seeking information and training herself for battle until she is taken in by the Rebel Army for a most dangerous assignment - to infiltrate and spy on the Yankees. This is the story of Belle Boyd and how she became a Rebel spy. This is the start of her legend.
Florida was the third Southern state to secede from the United States in 1860-61. With its small population of 140,000 and no manufacturing, few Confederate resources were allocated to protect the state. Some 15,000 Floridians served in the Union and Confederate armies (the highest population percentage of any southern state), but perhaps Florida's greatest contributions came from its production of salt (an essential need for preserving meat and manufacturing gunpowder), its large herds of cattle (which fed two southern armies), and its 1500 mile shoreline (which allowed smugglers to bring critical supplies from Europe and the Carribean). Florida in the Civil War: Blockaders will focus on the men and ships that fought this prolonged battle at sea, along the long and largely vacant coasts of the Sunshine State and on Florida soil. The information will be drawn from official sources, newspaper articles and private accounts. Approximately fifty (50) period photographs and drawings will be incorporated into the text.
