The Eye Of The Beholder

George Gordon (better known as a magician, The Great Gordano) died by poison in his home while drinking with a group of colleagues, friends and acquaintances. In his young days, before an accident had confined him to a wheelchair, Gordon had been famous: he had taken lessons from the master magicians. The master lesson he learned was that “The art of illusion is the art of distraction. The audience must think it is watching all the time. But there must be one movement when the audience is not watching. Only a split second. But without that split second the illusion becomes impossible.” After Gordon’s death the police are faced with a limited group of suspects. All these, their histories and their ideas, are woven into the narrative. The police discover much that is astonishing and significant, but nothing that tells them who killed The Great Gordano or why. This is an unusual suspense story with an exotic background and a devastating revelation at the end. John Wainwright has himself accomplished a trick not unworthy of the Great Gordano.
