Cover for Discovery(With: William Wu,Leslie Fish,Charles E. Gannon,E.R. Stewart,Don Hawthorne,John F. Carr)

War World: Discovery, edited by John F. Carr, is the 9th book in the on-going War World Saga, which includes 3 novels, the most recent being War World: The Battle of Sauron by John F. Carr & Donald Hawthorne published in 2008. The War World series is a shared-world universe created by Jerry E. Pournelle & John F. Carr and is set in Jerry Pournelle's CoDominium/Empire of Man future history. The moon Haven contains the harshest environments for life among the seventy habitable planets within the CoDominium sphere. After Haven's discovery, this distant moon quickly becomes the center of a major lawsuit over its ownership. When the New Church of Universal Harmony buys the Charter, the big mining companies send their agents to find a way to muscle their way in. The Harmonies quickly find themselves on the defensive. Behind the lines, some of the biggest industrial magnates, the Bronson and DeSilva families, are pulling strings to secure rights to strip-mine Haven of its resources and mineral wealth. This battle only intensifies when shimmer stones, the most valuable gems in the known universe, are discovered on Haven. The Bureau of Relocation sees Haven, more than a year's spaceship journey from Earth, as the perfect dumping ground for political dissidents and criminals. Within the CoDominium, there's a fracture between U.S. and Soviet interests; both powers want to use Haven for their own means. Meanwhile, the New Church of Universal Harmony is finding its lands overwhelmed with undesirables from Earth who neither want to work or live a meditative life. This conflict quickly turns violent as the newcomers scheme to steal food and goods from the non-violent Harmonies, who see their culture undergo a major shift to confront the new realities brought by the displaced transportees from Earth. When Kennicott and Dover Mineral Development send their agents to fight over the newly discovered hafnium and shimmer stone deposits, the violence and bloodshed is ratcheted up. Finally, the CoDominium Marines are sent in to save the day-but for whom: the Harmonies, the miners, the convicts, or their puppet masters back on Earth?

Cover for Takeover(With: Don Hawthorne,John F. Carr)

WAR WORLD: TAKEOVER is the second volume in a grand reissue of War World that will present Haven’s history in a chronological fashion for the very first time. Takeover is a trade hardcover volume and includes eight new stories as well as two previously published yarns. On Earth, overpopulation and rising nationalism require the resettlement of millions of troublesome minorities or the fragile peace between the USSR and the USA will go down in flames. It is up to the CoDominium to solve this problem and it just so happens the Bureau of ReLocation has discovered the perfect dumping ground for millions of unwanted minorities and religious fanatics while the mining companies exploiting Haven’s considerable resources need a cheap and expendable labor pool. One hand washes the other, thus the CD Bureau of Intelligence gives orders to subvert Harmony rule and turn Haven into a CoDominium Protectorate. Meanwhile, the inhabitants of Haven are having their own problems due to too many transportees from Earth, too few resources, too few live births and the most inhospitable environment known to sustain life—just barely. If that’s not enough, now they have to face a hostile takeover by the very people they left Earth to escape! For more info, visit our new War World web site at: www.warworldcentral.com

Cover for The Lidless Eye

THE SAURONS ARE COMING! The New Harmonies were original owners and settlers of Haven until the CoDominium decided any place that inhospitable would make an excellent dumping ground for political exiles, troublesome minorities and garden variety criminals. Over a year from Earth, by way of the old Bureau of Relocation deportee ships, Haven was the end of the line of CoDominium occupied space. During the Imperium, Haven was used as a recruiting ground for the Imperial Marines and became one of the first worlds abandoned when the war against the Sauron dominated Coalition of Secession got ugly. Although humanity has annihilated the Sauron Homeworld, the cost was high: the First Empire is beginning its long spiral into a Dark Age and the secret of interstellar travel will soon be lost for centuries. When a shipload of Saurons bent on conquest arrive unexpectedly, War World goes from pest-hole to Hellhole. Born of rebellion and civil war, cut off from the rest of humanity after the Secession Wars, Haven is bombed back to barbarism by the Sauron invaders. The Saurons, in fear of Imperial revenge, have vowed to cut Haven off from the rest of the Empire while they slowly absorb the superior human norms into their own perverted gene pool. Any and all who resist will die. The Haveners should have been easy pickings for the superhuman newcomers. However, what the Saurons hadn’t anticipated was the Haven is a world forever at war, each with all—and all against the Saurons.

Cover for The Battle of Sauron(With: Don Hawthorne,John F. Carr)

War World is a future warfare series created by John F. Carr and Jerry Pournelle inspired by the works of H. Beam Piper. The War World volumes include five original short story collections, two novels and are part of Pournelles CoDominium and Empire of Man Future History, spanning several thousand years. War World takes place on a barely-habitable moon named Haven, or War World as it becomes known. Haven is a hard scrabble world of extreme temperatures, hard radiation, deadly flora and fauna, wastelands and breeds the toughest denizens in human occupied space. "For those of you unfamiliar with the War World series, this volume would be an ideal introduction, since it chronicles the arrival of the Sauron invaders on Haven, a barely habitable moon of a Jovian planet Cat's Eye. It's a space adventure in the mold of H. Beam Piper's work and based on an idea developed by myself and Jerry Pournelle." - John F. Carr The new novel, "War World: The Battle of Sauron" takes place in the waning days of the First Empire of Man, a future history inspired by Piper's own Terro-Human Future History. Portions of this novel first appeared in War World Vol. I : The Burning Eye and War World Vol. II : Death's Head Rebellion , edited by Jerry E. Pournelle and John F. Carr, published by Baen Books in 1988 and 1989

Cover for Cyborg Revolt

The battle between the Sauron Coalition of Secession and the First Empire of Man in the twenty-seventh century ended in a war of extermination and the all-out bombardment of the planet Sauron. The only surviving Sauron spaceship, the Fomoria, is commanded by Vessel First Rank Galen Diettinger. Fleeing Imperial pursuit, the Saurons land on Haven, a hardscrabble world of extreme temperatures, hard radiation, deadly flora and fauna and wastelands containing some of the toughest humans in occupied space. Born in rebellions and civil war, life on Haven is a constant struggle against the harsh moon’s environment, as well as its other occupants—animal and human—all desperate to carve out their own niche. On this desolate moon, the Sauron Soldiers not only have to fight off the human inhabitants, but face a mutiny in their own ranks, as the Cyborg Super Soldiers make a bid to rule the last surviving colony. The Cyborgs are the ultimate product of Sauron’s millennium-long eugenics program and as such are the end-point in the Race’s military development. To the Super Soldiers it is unthinkable that a mere Soldier—no matter how brilliant—should command the new Sauron Homeworld. Meanwhile, Brigadier Gary Cummings, commander of the Haven Volunteers, has lost both his headquarters and military forts. But Brigadier Cummings has fought the Saurons before and knows that the Saurons have no mercy for human norms; this is a war of total domination. The Saurons want to own Haven and use her population as breeding stock for future Soldiers. To fight back, the Brigadier is starting a guerilla campaign in the outback. Castell City and Lermontovgrad have been bombed back to the stone age, but the humans of War World have been tested before…. The one thing the Saurons hadn’t anticipated was a mutiny in their own ranks leading to a three-cornered war.

Cover for Jihad!

War World: Jihad! is the third volume in a grand reissue of the War World anthologies presenting Haven’s history in a chronological fashion. Jihad! is a trade hardcover and includes seven new stories, a short novel and one previously published yarn. The CoDominium is fraying apart at the seams, and to save itself the Soviet/American coalition is exporting Earth’s problems to the outer worlds, including exiling millions of Earth’s fanatic Muslims on Haven. Nor is this volatile situation helped when off-worlders from Levant arrive to support the rebels with military advisors and advanced weaponry. When Dire Lake dries up, famine and pestilence arrive with a vengeance. The Faithful believe that this is a sign from Allah: the time has arrived to overthrow the corrupt CoDominium lackeys and their Company sponsors in the Northern Steppes. So the Mahdi declares a Jihad and warfare breaks out with only a thin blue line between the jihadists and what remains of civilization on Haven. In a last-ditch attempt to save the Haven colony, Admiral Lermontov sends in the 42nd Marines. Will the Marines arrive in time? And if they do, can they stop the jihadists and save the overwhelmed CoDominium Marine garrison at Fort Camerone? Or will they be undone by the Brotherhood and other off-world powers seeking the dissolution of the CoDominium?

Cover for The Patriotic Wars

War World: The Patriotic Wars is a new War World collection of stories featuring the tearing apart of the end of the CoDominium, the Soviet/United States world government that has kept the peace on Earth and throughout human-occupied space for the past century. Now, the alliance is collapsing as the Bronson cabal attempts to take over the Grand Senate and the CoDominium itself. Some even claim the Saurons have a secret role in the breakup of the CoDominium and are behind the growing Patriotic Wars on the Earth. Haven, one of the CoDominium’s poorest and most distant colonies, is one of the first to feel the pinch as its fragile government begins to disintegrate, when the CoDominium authorities recall part of the 77th CoDominium Marines back to Earth. Tensions increase as local warlords and gangs begin to make their grab for power. Those communities farthest from the Shangri-La Valley are most at risk; it’s now up to them to protect themselves from roving bands of blood-thirsty nomads and power-hungry thugs. Some see the CoDominium’s decline as an opportunity, while those on the edge of survival see it as a betrayal. The one thing they all understand is that Haven is now alone and on her own—completely!

Cover for Falkenberg's Regiment

War World: Falkenberg’s Regiment is the first new John Christian Falkenberg novel in over 20 years. Falkenberg was created by Jerry E. Pournelle and made his first appearance in “Peace With Honor” in Analog Science Fiction and Fact in 1972. That and other Falkenberg stories appeared in his fix-up novel, The Mercenary. Colonel Falkenberg and his 42nd Marine Regiment served as the last line of defense of the CoDominium and its many colonial words. This book continues the Falkenberg story, detailing his adventures and those of the 42nd CoDominium Marines on Haven (War World) and on Churchill, as Falkenberg and Admiral Lermontov struggle to keep the CoDominium from fracturing. On Haven the Colonel finds himself set between the Mahdi and his fanatical forces, on one hand, and Dover Minerals and the Bronson family, on the other hand. While on Churchill, Falkenberg is called upon to rectify the problems caused by the CoDominium Bureau of Relocations wholesale dumping of antagonistic populations on the hardscrabble world of Churchill, previously settled by British subjects in favor of the monarchy. Nor, does it help when the Brotherhood, a conspiracy of colonial CD military officers, gets involved providing weapons and money to the rebels.

For those on Haven, it’s the beginning of the Great Die-Off as the petrocarb plants run out of fuel and millions are left with too little to eat and nowhere to go. Haven is now cut-off from the rest of the CoDominium and completely on her own. Cover for War World Concordance

The core of this War World Concordance was assembled over a period of eight years, beginning in 1987, when Jim Baen asked Jerry Pournelle and myself to create a shared-world universe taking place in Jerry’s CoDominium/Empire of Man Future History for Baen Books. After creating the planet Haven (aka War World) and working out a rough background, Jerry and I asked a number of other writers to write stories for the first War World anthology. There were a number of requests for a comprehensive concordance to explain all the oddities and peculiarities of the Byers System, Haven’s astronomy, geography, day/night cycle, seasons, geology, biology, history, flora and fauna, inhabitants, etc. This Concordance is the result. The lion’s share of the physical description and analysis of the Byers System, Cat’s Eye, and Haven were produced by Stephen Shervais. We owe him a great debt of thanks. Recently, Doug McElwain has become one of our top War World authorities, as well as author, and has been a great help in expanding the scope of War World. Special thanks go to Jerry Pournelle for allowing me to continue and add to his wonderful creation, the CoDominium and Empire of Man Future History. Other important contributors are Don Hawthorne, for his marvelous work on the Saurons, E.R. Stewart, who single-handedly brought the Church of New Universal Harmony to life, and Harry Turtledove and S.M. Stirling for their creation of the Ha-Bandari; all of whom have come to live in readers’ imaginations through the word. Finally, Evan Ladouceur, one of our distinguished continuity editors, who has been a great help in keeping the background true to Jerry’s vision. Portions of this Concordance were provided by Jerry Pournelle, Stephen Shervais, Doug McElwain, Larry King, Poul Anderson, Don Hawthorne, John Dalmas, E.R. Stewart, William F. Wu, Larry Niven, S.M. Stirling, Chuck Gannon, Harry Turtledove, John F. Carr, Susan Shwartz, Roland Green, Al Brown, Mark Moeser and many others. More recently, Doug McElwain has added some fascinating and crucial material on the Alderson Drive and the Langston Field. For the War World chronology and continuity, we thank Larry King, whose help has been invaluable. His website: Science Fiction Timeline Site: Jerry Pournelle’s Future History (At: http://www.chronology.org/pournelle/) is the best CoDominium/Empire of Man database on the Internet. In addition, the Wikipedia entries on the CoDominium and Empire of Man were very useful sources for information on the background of future histories. As were, of course, Jerry Pournelle’s own works, especially The Prince (with S.M. Stirling) and The Mote in God’s Eye (with Larry Niven).

ISBN: 937912832

War World: Road Warriors is a new War World collection of stories featuring the survivors of the CoDominium, the USSR/US world government which has kept the peace on Earth and throughout human-occupied space for the past century. Earth has been badly wounded in the nuclear holocaust, which has made large portions of the planet uninhabitable. Now the survivors, most of them residing in far-flung colony worlds, will have to forge their own course. Warfare breaks out on New Washington when one of the last CD Naval flotillas, sponsored by Bronson allies, arrives to end the Falkenberg Protectorate and place Colonel John Falkenberg under arrest. Marginal worlds like Haven descend into complete barbarism as food factories-without off-world deliveries of petroleum-fail and mass starvation ensues. Haven has never been self-sufficient, and now without outside help-the Four Horsemen rule the roadways. The most populated areas, like the Shangri-La Valley, suffer the most and bands of starving marauders and runaway militias head for the Northern Steppes, where the herdsmen keep their horses, cattle and muskylope.

Cover for The Falkenberg Protectorate

War World: The Falkenberg Protectorate is the bridge between Jerry Pournelle’s The Mercenary and Prince of Mercenaries . John Christian Falkenberg III was created by Jerry E. Pournelle and made his first appearance in “Peace with Honor” in Analog Science Fiction and Fact in 1972. That and other Falkenberg stories appeared in his fix-up novel, The Mercenary . Colonel Falkenberg and his 42nd Marine Regiment served as the last line of defense of the CoDominium and its many colonial words. After the 42nd Regiment was disbanded, Falkenberg created Falkenberg’s Legion, which acted as an unofficial arm of the CoDominium, sponsored and supported by both Grand Admiral Lermontov and the Grant family. The Legion fought throughout CoDominium space on worlds as far flung as Sparta and Haven—otherwise known as War World—in an attempt to strengthen the fragile coalition and contain break-away worlds. This book continues the Falkenberg story, detailing his adventures and those of Falkenberg’s Legion on the twin worlds of Franklin and New Washington, where he creates the Falkenberg Protectorate, as a base of operations as well as a home for the Legion. This novel chronicles Falkenberg’s military adventures as the Legion attempts to assert its control over the two worlds. In addition, the Legion is faced by an attack from a CoDominium fleet sent by the Bronson Family to disrupt and, if possible, eradicate Falkenberg’s Legion. This is the last gasp of the CoDominium as it falls apart after a nuclear war, which kills most of Earth’s diverse human population. The Falkenberg Protectorate is once again dedicated to my old friend and mentor, Jerry Pournelle, who died in his sleep on September 8, 2017. Jerry was one of the Grand Old Men of science fiction and will be missed. We worked together at Chaos Manor for over 20 years and put out over 30 anthologies and short story collections. Wikipedia, in their piece on Military Science Fiction, states: “The series of anthologies with the group title There Will Be War edited by Pournelle and John F. Carr (nine volumes from 1983 through 1990) helped keep the category active, and encouraged new writers to add to it.”
