There, one gigantic tree resembles a frighteningly distorted man, and the roots of the tree have shifted the blocks of the tomb. The narrator explains that the beekeeper who lives next door told him a story about the tree: Two renowned sculptors, Kalos and Musides, lived in the colonnaded villa, which was "resplendent" in its day. Both men created works that were widely known and celebrated. They were devoted friends, but different in disposition: Musides enjoyed the nightlife, while Kalos preferred the quiet of the olive grove. It was there he was said to receive his inspiration.

Walter Gilman, a student of mathematics and folklore at Miskatonic University, rents an attic room in the "Witch House," a house in Arkham that is rumored to be cursed. The first part of the story is an account of the house's history. The house once harboured Keziah Mason, an accused witch who disappeared mysteriously from a Salem jail in 1692. Gilman discovers that, for the better part of two centuries, many of the attic's occupants have died prematurely. The dimensions of Gilman's attic room are unusual and seem to conform to a kind of unearthly geometry. Gilman theorizes that the structure can enable travel from one plane or dimension to another. Shortly after moving into the attic, Gilman begins experiencing bizarre dreams in which he seems to float without physical form through an otherworldly space of unearthly geometry and indescribable colors and sounds. Among the elements, both organic and inorganic, he perceives shapes that he innately recognizes as entities which appear and disappear instantaneously and at random. Several times, his dreaming-self encounters bizarre clusters of "iridescent, prolately spheroidal bubbles," as well as a rapidly changing polyhedral-figure, both of which appear sapient.

It depicts the narrator exploring the outskirts of a city called Hampden and finding a special tree atop an unusual hill. From the hill, the man witnesses the Bitterroot Mountains, a seemingly impossible feat of geography. The tree makes him daydream about a temple or tomb in a land with three red suns. The temple was half-violet, half-blue. Some shadows attract the narrator inside, where he sees three flaming eyes watching him from the darkness. He awakens later in a different location, with his clothing torn and dirty. With his camera, the narrator takes multiple pictures of the tree and shows them to his friend Theunis. Later, they examine each photograph and notice three shadows projected by the tree, indicating that there were three suns causing them, as seen in the narrator's dream. Theunis tells a story about a shadow or dark force which was repelled by an Egyptian priest, Ka-Nefer, during the Year of the Black Goat. He used a peculiar amber gem to divert the dark entity. Afterwards, Theunis uses a camera obscura, and a similar gem in his possession, to examine the photos taken earlier. Suddenly, something in the photo renders him unconscious. Upon awakening, Theunis instructs the narrator to burn the pictures and lock up the gem. He does as instructed, but glances at a drawing in the photograph made by Theunis. The narrator recoils in horror at the sight of a clawed hand, with tendrils, reaching for a spot in the grass where he received his vision.
