Cover for The Starry Wisdom: A Tribute to H.P. Lovecraft

23 contemporary visions of cosmic transformation, mutation and madness - many inspired directly by the thoughts and writings of H P Lovecraft, others reflecting his strangely presentient themes, perhaps unwittingly, in their own bizarre sub-texts. Here the primal beings of Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos stalk a post-modern landscape of social collapse, ethnic cleansing, genetic engineering and nuclear devastation - nightmare prophecies from his pulp pages which have now come chillingly true. The undercurrents of sexual and ecological displacement which powered Lovecraft's work have finally been laid bare, providing this maligned genius with a long-overdue retrospective and revealing him to be a true prophet of the 20th century. The Starry Wisdom includes a host of brand new, previously unpublished prose and graphic works, plus select reprints which are now shown in a brand new light, forming a fascinating document which will appeal not only to readers of H P Lovecraft, but to all lovers of innovative art and literature in the science fiction, horror and fantasy genres.

Cover for The Baen Big Book of Monsters

Trade Paperback Halloween-themed BIG MONSTER anthology . Featuring a mix of classic science fiction reprints and original stories all filled with: REALLY BIG MONSTERS! Includes legends such as Arthur C. Clark, H.P. Lovecraft, Robert Bloch, David Drake and more, as well as Baen regulars New York Times best seller Larry Correia, Wen Spencer, Sarah A. Hoyt, and more. SIZE MATTERS From the dragons of legend to Jack the Giant Killer’s colleague to King Kong and Godzilla, people have found the idea of giant creatures both scary and fascinating. Why so many should find accounts of a critter big enough to gulp down a puny human like an insignificantly small hor d’oeuvre or step on said human and leave a grease spot might be explained by the psychologists, but such yarns are undeniable fun, and here’s a book crammed full of things that you can’t outrun because they take big steps, by writers with equally large reputations, including: David Drake , best-selling author of the Hammer’s Slammers and RCN series, describes the far future plight of an unusual descendant of present-day humans, who’s being pursued by the descendants of another species, which are much larger than they were in our time. Robert Bloch , winner of the Hugo award and the lifetime achievement award of the World Fantasy Convention, and author of the classic horror novel Psycho , introduces an unusual orphan and aspiring thespian who was much more than he seemed and was destined to play the biggest role of anyone’s lifetime. Philip Wylie , co-author of the SF classic, When Worlds Collide and other imaginative works, tells of the arrival of a very, very tall giant on Earth and what happened next, in a sharp-edged satiric tale. Murray Leinster , known as the Dean of Science Fiction Writers, spins a yarn of a stranded starship whose crew must get replacement parts from an abandoned outpost in order to take off again—if they can reach the outpost through the swarming gigantic insect life of the planet. H.P. Lovecraft, renowned master of horror, is on board with a story of a star-spawned thing which was not only huge, but invisible as well. Plus all-new stories by New York Times best-selling author Larry Correia , and award-winning authors Sarah A. Hoyt and Wen Spencer. And much more. About some of the contributors: “[David Drake is] a superb storyteller.” — Library Journal “[Robert] Bloch has become a virtual fixture on the popular culture landscape.” — Publishers Weekly “Don’t plan on getting anything else done if you start a Wen Spencer novel; they are exceedingly hard to put down!” — Catherine Asaro , Nebula Award winning author “[Sarah A. Hoyt’s science fiction is] exciting and appealing . . . so fast-paced . . . the reader will reach escape velocity.” — Kevin J. Anderson “[H.P. Lovecraft was] the twentieth century’s greatest practitioner of the classic horror tale.” — Stephen King

ISBN: 1502939924

Speculative poetry travels winding roads leading to wondrous worlds, regions never traversed by mainstream verse. Fantastic poems range in the material they treat from the strange but explainable to the utterly fanciful, from horror to wonder, and from the rigidly verisimilitudinous to the purely surrealist. They may utilize traditional prosody or may avail themselves of the discontinuities and fragmentation of modernist free verse. They may use as setting the primary world, a secondary world, or a combination of the two. With roots planted firmly in the mythic and folkloric epics and ballads of yore, and branches reaching high into the endless skies of modern fantasy, science fiction, and horror, speculative poetry is a historic and vital poetic genre, the source of the most thoughtful, imaginative verse being written today. Red Sky features over 100 years' worth of speculative poetry from yesterday's masters, modern award winners, and emerging stars. Filled with luminous ideas, otherworldly adventures, metaphysical encounters and startling futuristic speculations, these poems will appeal to all readers as they chart the emergence and evolution of speculative poetry. Details of Herbert West’s life from childhood to death—and beyond can be found within The Legacy of the Reanimator. Reanimation. The process of bringing life to that which is dead. Cover for Fireside Ghost Stories for Christmas Eve

Ghost stories at Christmas can be traced back to pagan times – Yule and Saturnalia – when the Winter Solstice (like Hallowe’en and Wulpurgis Night) was viewed as a moment in space and time where the thinness of the boundaries between the supernatural and human worlds became remarkably plastic, and all manner of strange things were said to be seen and heard in the winter air. while we no longer have the old stories spoken in the old homes around the old fires by the old myth-keepers, let us sit around and enjoy some of the stories that would have sent shivers up the great-great-grandchildren of those little ones sitting around the Yule fire – the supernatural literature of the Victorians and Edwardians. Enclosed in this volume are tales of dark winter nights and harrowing encounters between the worlds of Man and the Hereafter. There are tales of cursed antiquities, otherworldly toy stores, possessed dolls, deals with the devil, and murderous cabin fever. I hope your Christmas is – as M. R. James put it “may be the cheerfuller for a story-book” which takes you back to a different world – one not mapped out, trending, or tweeted about, one dark, forbidding, and evocative. Perhaps I may be a luddite for saying it, but I find something strangely comforting in that. Something consoling and hushing and chilling. Perhaps you will, too.

Cover for Fireside Horror Stories About Supernatural Cats

There’s just something about cats. We own them, viralize them, buy sweaters and calendars and mugs with them on it. They are points of fascination and obsession. Even though the 21st century has rejected the superstitions of previous centuries, returning cats to the godhood of Ancient Egypt, we still recognize their power to suggest the dark side of nature. Outside cats leave their human’s property at dusk and venture out into the darkness, returning in the morning with the corpses of birds and rodents. They step out of the comfort zones of most humans, plumb the hours of night when humans feel most alone and vulnerable, and they own that space. Cats have featured heavily in horror fiction since the Middle Ages, and have inspired masters of the genre from Poe and Stoker to Lovecraft and Bierce, from Le Fanu and Chambers to Blackwood and Saki. Cats’ role in supernatural fiction, horror, and folklore is likely due to their perceived liminality: they seem to be able to access an alternate plane of experience that is just outside of humans’ comfort zone. They venture into the murky, liminal spaces of life – the spaces where we are afraid to go alone, too big to fit, too high to climb, and to dark to see. Can a more fitting metaphor for the afterlife – for magic, for the spiritual, for the unknown – possibly be concocted? The stories contained in this book are among the most famous felines in literature. We will explore this side of the cat as well as its darker connotations. There are stories of ghost cats, battered felines getting gruesome revenge, speaking animals, messengers from the afterlife, feline royalty, shape-shifting were-cats, and much more. It’s the purrrfect companion for a dark and windy night.
