Immortalized in these famous stories, G. K. Chesterton's endearing amateur sleuth has entertained countless generations of readers. For, as his admirers know, Father Brown's cherubic face and unworldly simplicity, his glasses and his huge umbrella, disguise a quite uncanny understanding of the criminal mind at work. This edition includes seven tales from a number of G. K. Chesterton's "Father Brown" books.
Critic, author, and debunker extraordinaire, G. K. Chesterton (1874–1936) delighted in probing the ambiguities of Christian theology. A number of his most successful attempts at combining first-rate fiction with acute social observation appear in this original selection from his best detective stories featuring the priest-sleuth Father Brown. A Chestertonian version of Sherlock Holmes, this little cleric from Essex — with "a face as round and dull as a Norfolk dumpling" and "eyes as empty as the North Sea" — appears in six suspenseful, well-plotted tales: "The Blue Cross," "The Sins of Prince Saradine," "The Sign of the Broken Sword," "The Man in the Passage," "The Perishing of the Pendragons," and "The Salad of Colonel Cray." An essential item in any mystery collection, these delightful works offer a particular treat for lovers of vintage detective stories and will engage any reader.

G.K. Chesterton's quiet and unassuming little priest has long since joined the pantheon of great literary detectives. Combining the shrewdness of Miss Marple, the insight of Sherlock Holmes and the punctiliousness of Hercule Poirot with the deep and intuitive knowledge of the dark secrets of human nature gained in the confessional, Father Brown is perhaps better equipped than any of them to uncover the startling truth whenever murder, mayhem and mystery stalk society.
'You had better see this for yourself,' he said heavily. 'But I warn you to be prepared.' 'Prepared for what?' asked the other. 'Only for the most horrible thing I ever saw in my life,' said Father Brown. Sir Arthur Vaudrey vanishes without a trace; a young girl is haunted by an invisible man and an Admiral 'drowns' in a slimy pool. Strange, sinister and terrifying things are afoot in this compelling collection of stories strictly for the strong of heart. Thankfully, always present is the relentless little priest, Father Brown, who manages to unravel the most unfathomable mysteries and solve the most sensational cases--including the worst crime in the world... This edition presents 28 of the best Father Brown stories, chosen and introduced by their finest critic, W. W. Robson. His work brings together a lifetime's critical appreciation of Chesterton and includes the establishment of new texts for some of the stories.
This is a unique collection of ten of Chesterton's famous Father Brown stories which puts special emphasis on the role that Brown's Catholic faith played in helping him solve the murder mysteries. As Dorothy Sayers once wrote, Chesterton was "the first man of our time to introduce the great name of God into a detective story … to enlarge the boundaries of the detective story by making it deal with death and real wickedness and real, that is to say, divine judgment." This paperback Father Brown edition includes generous footnotes (not available in other editions) which help to clarify the literary and historical allusions made by Father Brown. It is based on the texts of the original editions by Chesterton for assurance of complete authenticity, and is set in easily readable type. These are excellent short detective yarns in the classic British tradition of Sherlock Holmes - puzzling concoctions of mysterious crimes, dubious suspects and ambiguous clues. They are among the very best of the Father Brown stories.
