Dr. Palfrey must find it, but there is a big business syndicate also involved who aim to bring Europe to an economic standstill and ultimate starvation. They conceal themselves with curious black masks, but other clues as to their identities emerge and their plans are well advanced. Will Palfrey be in time?
Mallen passes through Customs after a transatlantic crossing, but then a mysterious box that he has smuggled ashore becomes the subject of violent attempts to seize it. Behind these is to be found Abba, an arch-evil buccaneer who will stop at nothing. He is extremely rich and he and his followers will do everything possible to promote international discord and trouble, not least through the practice of black magic. Dr. Palfrey steps into the fray and must somehow deal with the situation before it gets totally out of hand, but that is not as easy as might be imagined.

A Darwin explorer and photographer, Mr. Keith Young, believes he has found radioactivity in a mysterious 'forbidden city' in Arnhem Land, inside the aboriginal reserve. Mr. Young went to photograph the 'city' - which is fashioned by Nature from great limestone cliffs. The rock formation is shaped like battlements, towers, walls and streets. Mr. Young said: 'At night the "city" glowed with eerie light, which I consider to be radioactive in origin. 'He says he will not disclose the location of what he considers may be radioactive ores until he has discussed the matter with Canberra officials.-A. P.
