As an infection rages, leaving a swath of horror in its wake, Peter and his father do their best to maintain normal lives. Peter, just a child when the infection took hold of the nation, has taken up a militaristic and punitive view of how to deal with the walking dead. His father, however, can’t help but feel compassion for the creatures. When they discover their fence has been breached, Peter’s father suspects the intruder is much more than a rabid zombie—and risks everything with his heart.
In a post-apocalyptic world, Peter and Mr. Breeze cross a dangerous and terrifying new America in search of a safe haven. Although Peter is no longer the boy he used to be, he still remembers his life before Mr. Breeze. When the two seek refuge in a protected city, guards take one look at the pair and turn them away. Back on the road, as Mr. Breeze and Peter encounter more dead towns and predators, Peter can’t help but wonder if his fading memories of childhood will be enough to keep him from giving in to the violence that haunts him.
