Which was a big freaking problem. She was light and I was far too much darkness for the likes of her. I was too paranoid and controlling because I’d learned very few people could be trusted. Not my family. Not my former job with the Army. I could barely breathe around all the lies I’d been fed in my life. Being alone was safer. Until she showed up at my door in trouble.
