Terry Carr's annual anthologies are now firmly established as the most reliable and entertaining guides to the very best of the past year's new science fiction. As usual, Mr Carr has read every new sf story published in 1977, and has selected nine stories showing the full originality and range of science fiction. They include two Nebula Award "Stardance", by Spider and Jeanne Robinson, in which the developing art-form of freefall dancing provides to communication with potentially hostile visiting aliens, and "The Screwfly Solution", by Raccoona Sheldon (better known under her pseudonym "James Tiptree Jr") a horrifying story of an infection which causes men to murder women. The other contributors range from newcomers Lee KIllough and Lisa Tuttle, through some of the brightest stars of 1970s sf - Michael Bishop, Vonda McIntyre, John Varley - to the old master Fritz Leiber, whose story is an irresistible tale of scientifically-conceived spell which conjures up a thoroughly irresistible visitor from another dimension.
