The Doctor and Ace end up in the village of Crook Marsham in 1968. The Doctor contemplates retiring and Ace falls in love with local boy Robin Yeadon. in a nearby retirement home, Edmund Trevithick, who once played the fictional character known as Professor Nightshade in the BBC t.v series of the same title, begins to see other fictional characters from the program as if they were real. The Doctor realizes that Crook Marsham has had many unexplained deaths throughout history. The villagers are then plagued by appearances of lost loved ones.

Shadowmind is an original novel written by Christopher Bulis and based on the long-running British science fiction television series Doctor Who. The TARDIS has been split apart stranding Benny is early 20th Century London, Ace on a barren world in the distant future, and the Doctor gone. Whilst trying to work out has happen to the TARDIS (and the Doctor) Benny must deal with grisly murders that make the Jack the Rippers murders pale in comparison and Ace must lead a group of human guerillas against a race of alien, um, bugs. What better way to flesh out character relationship than to thrust them into an adventure involving just the both of them, (Newer companion Benny and hardened war soldier Ace) without the focal point of the novel (The Doctor) to get in thier way. The most important part of this relationship is Benny seeing Ace's point of view regarding the Doctor's meddling and using her as a pawn in on of his games.
The Doctor and Bernice visit Betrushia, a planet famous for its beautiful ring system. They soon discover that the rain-drenched jungles are in turmoil. A vicious, genocidal war is raging between the lizard-like natives. The ground itself is wracked by mysterious earthquakes. And an unknown force is moving inexorably forwards, devastating everything in its path. Ace wanted out; she's resting on a neighboring world. But from the outer reaches of space, a far greater threat is approaching Betrushia, and even Ace may find it impossible to escape. With time running out, the Doctor must save the people of Betrushia from their own terrible legacy before the wrath of St Anthony's Fire is visited upon them all.
